Beverly Hopkins (American, 1926-2007)
Beverly Hopkins was born in 1926 in Eugene, Oregon. After receiving a BA in painting and drawing from the Univ. of OR in 1947 and an MA from Mills College in Oakland, CA in 1950, Hopkins headed to Europe to travel, paint and draw for 3 memorable years. She returned to the US and took a position as art librarian at the Springfield Art Museum. She later taught for a time at Drury College. In 1969 Hopkins returned to Oregon to earn her MFA, and in 1970 returned to Springfield for a teaching post at Southwest Missouri State University where she retired as professor emeritus in 1988. She passed away in August of 2007.
Hopkins was a much loved art professor and a prolific painter. Her work often centered on nature, and her concern for our ecosystem and the damage humans cause. She often incorporated political messages in her painting.
