Born in Kittery, Maine, Hunt Slonem grew up in a military family, living in Hawaii, Washington, Virginia, Connecticut, and California. In 1973 he graduated from Tulane University in New Orleans, beginning his lifelong love affair with Louisiana.
Slonem is known for extravagant spaces filled with an eclectic mix of antiques, collections of all kinds, and his own paintings and sculptures. Tying much of it together is his extensive aviary, as well as his extensive collection of friends whom he loves to entertain with lavish parties at any of his several homes from upstate New York to two plantations in Louisiana. His residences have been well documented in a 2007 book titled Pleasure Palaces: the art & homes of Hunt Slonem.
