Goldweight; Feline with Animal in Mouth

Dublin Core

Title

Goldweight; Feline with Animal in Mouth

Culture

Ashanti or Asante

Place Made

Western Africa, Ghana

Description

"The spots on the coat of this feline indicate that a leopard is represented. The small animal in its mouth could represent its offspring, but a cub would be held by the scruff of the neck; therefore, this more likely represents a prey animal that the leopard has caught. The goldweight might express the Asante proverb: 'No one teaches a leopard's cub how to spring.'" Researched by Caitlin Blaine, MSU Student, 2008, Under the direction of Dr. Billie Follensbee
