Description
While there are specific types and styles of Dan masks, each mask is seen as representing a separate, individualized being, with its own name, personality, and spirit. Masks are also believed to possess supernatural powers, and from this they derive authority and command respect. Masks are owned by family groups, with each mask owned by an individual member of the group. Each mask represents a direct relationship between the owner and the spirit that the mask portrays. The masks are used for social control, in boys circumcision, and even for pure entertainment.
