Goldweight; Antelope or Bushbuck with Broken Base

Dublin Core

Title

Goldweight; Antelope or Bushbuck with Broken Base

Culture

Ashanti or Asante

Place Made

Western Africa, Ghana

Description

"This goldweight may depict a bushbuck, and it might thus relate to a proverb that specifically mentions the bushbuck, such as 'I have seen a baboon who let his hair grow long when his wife died; but you bushbuck, what is that to you?' Alternatively, it could also depict a young antelope, and in that case, it could illustrate one of the many proverbs mentioning these animals, such as, 'The antelope's tail may be short, but it brushes its body with it notwithstanding,' or 'The antelope does not go to the market, but its skin does.'"
