Goldweight; Seated Woman with Curved Staff or Sword
Dublin Core
Title
Goldweight; Seated Woman with Curved Staff or Sword
Culture
Ashanti or Asante
Place Made
Western Africa, Ghana
Description
"The seated woman depicted represents a high-status individual, and likely a royal. She is seated on a stool, which in Asante society is reserved for high-status persons, and she holds a staff-like or sword-like object, which serves as a sort of scepter. This goldweight could represent the Asante proverb, 'When the head of the household dies, that is the end of the household,' which means that no group can survive without good leadership."
