Description
The female figure likely represent Senufo nature spirits, which are invoked by the Sandogo female secret society during divination rituals. Figures such as this were used to help identify the cause of a problem and to determine the appropriate remedy. Like the Kpellie mask, this figure illustrates many of the facial features that express the Senufo ideals of beauty, albeit in more naturalistic form. The scarification designs that radiate from the figures' navels are symbolic of the Senufo creation myth, and these scarifications are made on a girls body when she reaches the age of puberty.
