Plaque: EDSEL MATTHEWS / Edsel Matthews has been an integral part of the Springfield sports scene for over 50 years. 25 years as Activities Director for the Springfield Public Schools. A 3 year letterman in basketball, playing for his father at SMS where he captained the team, received the Virgil Cheek Student Athlete Award and won the MIAA Conference Outstanding Sportsmanship Award his senior year. After Graduating from SMS in 1963, Edsel received his Doctorate in Education from the University of Utah in 1970. During his tenure as head basketball coach at Drury College, he was NAIA District Coach of the Year in 1972-73 and 1977-78. His teams were ranked nationally in the top twenty, reaching the number one position in 1977-78. In addition he was the Basketball Weekly College Division Coach of the year in 1978. Founder of the Bass Pro Shops Tournament of Champions, one of the premier High School tournaments in the country. Athletic Director and Vice President of Athletics at Drury University beginning 2003, Edsel has provided the leadership in developing Harrison Stadium and the O'Reilly Family Events Center. Inducted to the Drury College Sports Hall of Fame in 1996, Springfield Sports Hall of Fame, Missouri High School Sports Hall of Fame and the Missouri Sports Hall of Fame in 2005.
