Wooden Bowl with Geometric Designs

Description
The more basic geometric designs on the Wooden Bowl and on the Wooden Pitcher from Mauritania, meanwhile, make the history of these particular motifs much more difficult to trace, although the functional form and the origin of the objects suggests that these are 20th century Islamic household items. The beautifully formed hardwood bowl has a finely raised, carved diamond design on each side that is filled with incised diamonds, rectangles, crosses, and zigzags. The quality of the material and of the carving, along with signs of wear and the fact that the bowl was carefully repaired at some point, suggests that this was a prestige object, but still used as a functional serving bowl.
